| Feb 12 Sweep Notes: In 2009, the sweep was moved to March due to the analog to digital transition originally scheduled for 2/17/09. The transition deadline was delayed, but the sweep was still measured in March. The comparisons use March 09 compared to February 10. In March 2009 WREG/CBS aired the NCAA Basketball Tournament for 2 of the 4 weeks. In February 2010, WMC/NBC aired the Winter Olympics from 2/12-2/28/10. Both of these impacted the household ratings. The chart includes 5 years of household ratings for comparison. | ||||

Nov 2011 Memphis TV Household News Ratings
The Overnight Household Ratings for the November 2011 sweeps are in.
At 6am – WREG increased their rating and share, but have not achieved the higher ratings from 08 & 09. WMC has their lowest rating in 4 years. WPTY & WHBQ remained about flat year to year.
At 5pm – WMC dropped 2 rating points (over 20% of their audience) year to year. This can probably be attributed to the new 4pm newscast lead-in that replaced Oprah this fall. FYI…the 4pm newscast on WMC did a 3.4 rating compared to the longer running 4pm newscast on WREG with a 5.25 rating. WREG & WHBQ have grown year to year and WPTY lost a couple tenths.
At 6pm – Again, WMC loses ground and WREG shows gains. WPTY is flat.
At 9pm/10pm – WHBQ made the largest gains of the big 4 in both of their newscasts from 2010 to 2011. Even though WMC is still the clear winner at 10pm their ratings are lower than previous years. WREG’s ratings remain flat.
November 2011 sweeps were 10/27-11/23/11. Below is the chart with the 3 previous years included.

May 2011 Memphis TV Household News Ratings
Wednesday, May 25, 2011, was the last day of the May Sweeps. I’ve included 4 years for comparison.
May 2011 brought many unique news stories to Memphis and the Mid-South which became national news. The severe weather, deadly tornadoes and the massive Mississippi River flood led the newscasts many days. President Barack Obama spoke at Booker T. Washington’s high school graduation. The Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder went 7 games in Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs after the Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs in Round 1.
WMC won the news ratings at 5pm and 6pm. WREG won the 6am ratings. And at 10pm, WMC and WREG were tied.

2010 82nd Academy Award Memphis Ties and Ratings

On March 7, 2010, the 82nd Annual Academy Awards aired on ABC and locally in Memphis on WPTY (ABC). The Memphis DMA average household rating was 21.5 with a 29 share. Last year in 2009, WPTY averaged a 14.9 household rating with a 20.5 share. An increase of 44% year to year.
You don’t have to be a media psychic to attribute the increase in Memphis and Mid-South viewership to the success of “The Blind Side”. Many of you know I’ve been following this since before they started filming the movie. You can read my previous post here. At the Academy Awards, Sandra Bullock, portraying local Memphian Leigh Anne Tuohy, won the Oscar for the best performance by an actress in a leading role for The Blind Side. While it did not win Best Picture, the nomination was enough to keep the local viewers tuned in until the end. This Commercial Appeal story tells of other Mid-South ties to The Blind Side.
Leigh Anne and Sean Tuohy walked the Red Carpet, attended the Academy Awards ceremony and were recognized by Sandra Bullock in her Oscar acceptance speech. Prior to the Academy Awards ceremony, Leigh Anne & Collins Tuohy sent Bullock a good luck gift according to this People story, “Leigh Anne Tuohy, the real-life woman whom Sandra portrayed in her Oscar-nominated role in The Blind Side, and her daughter Collins asked eco-friendly jewelry company Alex and Ani to create a special set of their Signature Expandable Bangles for the actress to say “we love you and good luck” at the Oscars. The mother-and-daughter team had a “good luck” charm, a guardian angel charm and even a Baltimore Ravens charm in honor of Michael Oher added to the set of bangles.”

Nationally, the 82nd Academy Awards telecast on ABC had the largest audience in 5 years, as reported by Media Life Magazine. “Sunday night’s telecast was the most-watched Oscars in five years, according to time zone-adjusted fast national ratings issued by Nielsen, drawing 41.3 million total viewers. That was up 5 million over last year and the best for any Oscar ceremony since 42.1 million watched the 2005 show. Last night’s Oscar ceremony averaged a 26.5 household rating and 40 share among Nielsen metered-market households. In 2009, the national household rating was 23.3 representing 36.3 million households.”
