Memphis Website Visitor Counts & Advertising Info

This week, 2 Memphis TV stations launched new website designs, WREG.com and MyFoxMemphis.com.

All media outlets have found their companion website to be a source for significant advertising income with annual revenue growth potential.

Below is a chart that will give an indication of the number of visitors to the Commercial Appeal and Memphis television station’s websites:

Websites visited yesterday Websites visited past week
  Persons 18+ Persons 18+
 CommercialAppeal.com 44,474 107,048
 MyEyewitnessNews.com           WPTY ABC24 & WLMT CW30 30,856 86,070
 MyFoxMemphis.com                                 WHBQ FOX 13 30,976 77,892
 WMCTV.com  WMC Ch 5  NBC 29,500 106,812
 WREG.com  WREG Ch 3  CBS 42,652 127,734

Buying advertising on websites is different than buying other media.  Various sized ads (banners, leaderboards, tiles, buttons, etc.) appear in multiple places with a link to a splash page or the advertisers website.  Other website advertising options are video pre-roll ads, pop-ups, rich media, contest sponsorships to name a few, and more are being added regularly.

The cost for the ads vary.  Some charge a range of CPMs based on the position and the page and you select the number of impressions (views).  And other ad positions are sold monthly or annually for a flat fee.  There are custom packages that will combine several elements to create an overall website campaign.  When you run these ads, it’s valuable to know the number of impressions for the ad, the number of visitors that click on the ad and the click through rate.

2/17/09-The Change from Analog TV to All-Digital Impacts Advertising

Update 1/26/09:  More information on the DTV transition and possible delay.

On February 17, 2009, analog TV will be completely replaced by all-digital TV broadcasting.  People receiving their TV signal with an antenna must get a digital converter box to view over-the-air broadcast stations.  The FCC has a website with the FAQs on the change to digital broadcasting.

According to a recent article from MediaLife Magazine, about 8% of the U.S. TV households are unprepared for the change.  They go on to say the demographics of these households are, “older and rural…less educated, high school dropouts, low income, especially under $25,000 yearly household income.  The top most-unready markets are Houston and Dallas. And then it’s Memphis and Austin, and Los Angeles…”

A Nielsen report from October 15 says Houston is least prepared with 15.8% unready and Ft. Myers/Naples is the most prepared with 2.4% unready.  This Nielsen report lists all of the markets and their percent of preparedness.  It puts Memphis at:

11.58% completely unready      20.68% partially unready      67.74% completely ready

Media planners, buyers and all advertisers should be aware of the potential impact this change will have on the television viewing audience and the Nielsen ratings beginning 2/17/09. This MediaLife Magazine story gives more in-depth information, but here are a few other things to consider:

  • The lag time before the unready households get the equipment to receive the signal will have an immediate impact on the audience levels.
  • If the unready households get cable or satellite, they will have more viewing options which could erode the broadcast audience.
  • Nielsen has moved the February sweep to March…3/5-4/1/09.
    • Projections using the March ratings will be somewhat skewed, especially 1st quarter 2010.
    • The 2009 1st quarter post buy analysis will not reflect Jan. through Feb. 17 actual audience levels.
    • The televised NCAA tournament, (also known as March Madness) will have a direct impact on the sweep ratings that are not consistent with regular viewing habits.

Since Memphis is near the top of the unready households list, TV advertisers should be informed and prepared to make adjustments to their advertising schedules according to their target demographic and flight dates.

WMC, WREG, WPTY/WLMT & WHBQ are all promoting the analog to digital transition to their Memphis and Mid-South viewers.  That is the absolute best way to reach the people that must buy the digital converter box to continue to see broadcast television beginning 2/17/09.

FYI…. WMC-TV 5 will conduct an analog shut off test on Wednesday, December 17th at 6:30pm.

Presidential Debate #2 Viewership – Memphis Ratings Winner

The 2nd Presidential Debate held on Tuesday, 10/7/08 between John McCain and Barack Obama at Belmont College in Nashville drew about 38.1 million viewers on the Big 4 Networks, with ABC attracting the largest number of viewers.  Media Life has the overnight recap.

Media Week reports on the total viewers for the 2nd Presidential Debate.  “According to Nielsen, 63.2 million viewers tuned in to one of the 11 networks that carried the debate, including ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, Telemundo, Univision, BBC-America, CNBC, CNN, FOX News Channel and MSNBC. The first debate drew an audience of 52.4 million.”

“Despite the increase, the presidential candidates failed to draw a larger audience than the vice-presidential debate last Thursday (Oct. 2), which had an audience of 69.9 million.”

“Nashville had the largest audience with a household rating of 59.2, followed by Memphis (55.7) and Baltimore (55.6). The Sacramento-Stockton-Modesto, Calif. market had the lowest rating with a 31.8.”
