Wednesday, May 25, 2011, was the last day of the May Sweeps. I’ve included 4 years for comparison.
May 2011 brought many unique news stories to Memphis and the Mid-South which became national news. The severe weather, deadly tornadoes and the massive Mississippi River flood led the newscasts many days. President Barack Obama spoke at Booker T. Washington’s high school graduation. The Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder went 7 games in Round 2 of the NBA Playoffs after the Grizzlies beat the San Antonio Spurs in Round 1.
WMC won the news ratings at 5pm and 6pm. WREG won the 6am ratings. And at 10pm, WMC and WREG were tied.

2011 Rising Mississippi River and the Memphis Flood
Here are a few pictures I took Saturday, 5/7/11 of the rising Mississippi River waters. They show the intersection of Riverside and Beale Street, and Mud Island … or actually, a few landmarks on Mud Island, while the rest of the southern part is under water.
These photos were shot on Saturday about 3pm was at 47.15 feet.
Below is the National Weather Service’s, Advance Hydrologic Prediction Service for Memphis showing the Flood Categories in feet. Predictions are the Mississippi River will crest Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 48 feet.

Can You Find Memphis Tiger Joe Jackson in this picture?

The 2011 Sports Illustrated NCAA Tournament Preview magazine cover is a compilation of players, coaches, mascots & cheerleaders from the college basketball teams heading to the 2011 NCAA Basketball Tournament. Memphian Joe Jackson is the representative for the Memphis Tigers. Do you see his great action shot?
This is one of 5 regional editions…and the 2 covers I’ve seen have Joe Jackson pictured in the same position. According to another story, the five regional covers feature Ohio State’s David Lighty, BYU’s Jimmer Fredette, Kansas’ Marcus Morris, Duke’s Nolan Smith and UConn’s Kemba Walker.
After winning the Conference USA Championship, the University of Memphis is seeded #12 in the West, with a 25-9 record. On Friday 3/18, they play 5th seeded Arizona (27-7) at 1:45 pm CDT in Tulsa.
Go Tigers Go!
Ironically….or not, this week’s issue of Sports Illustrated has an interesting and long story about ex-Tiger and current Kentucky Basketball coach John Calipari. The title is: Too Slick, Too Loud, Too Successful. Why John Calipari Can’t Catch A Break.

| Feb 11 Sweep Notes: In 2009, the sweep was moved to March due to the analog to digital transition originally scheduled for 2/17/09. The transition deadline was delayed, but the sweep was still measured in March. The comparisons use March 09 compared to February 10. In March 2009 WREG/CBS aired the NCAA Basketball Tournament for 2 of the 4 weeks. In February 2010, WMC/NBC aired the Winter Olympics from 2/12-2/28/10. Both of these impacted the household ratings. The chart includes 4 years of household ratings for comparison. | ||||

Good Things Happening in Memphis
Updated 3/24/10: Last night was the opening of South Pacific at the Orpheum Theatre. I thought it was a wonderful show that kept me entertained from beginning to end. And Rodgers and Hammerstein’s music is synonymous with a classic Broadway musical. You’ll know many of the songs, even if you are not familiar with the show. One person in the audience told me that the performance at the Orpheum was as good as the Lincoln Center production they had seen last year in New York City. Here is a review of South Pacific from Downtown Memphis. South Pacific will end it’s run at the Orpheum on March 28.
Original Post 3/17/10: Here are a few good things happening in Memphis.
The Orpheum Theatre just announced the 2010-2011 Broadway Season. There is something for everyone. New shows never seen in Memphis as well as several favorites back for an encore. Bravo!
The Color Purple: August 24 – 29, 2010
Wicked: October 13 – 31, 2010
9 to 5 the Musical: November 2 – 7, 2010
Dreamgirls: November 30 – December 5, 2010
Shrek the Musical: January 18 – 23, 2011
Young Frankenstein: March 8 – 13, 2011
Monty Python’s Spamalot: May 6 – 8, 2011
Disney’s Beauty and the Beast: June 14 – 19, 2011
And don’t forget the Broadway Shows coming up in March and June.
South Pacific runs March 23-28 at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis. “Rodgers & Hammerstein’s SOUTH PACIFIC swept the 2008 Tony Awards®, winning seven honors including Best Musical Revival and Best Director for Bartlett Sher. Considered by many the finest musical ever written, the score’s songs include such classics as “Some Enchanted Evening,” “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” and “There is Nothin’ Like A Dame.”
Chicago runs June 22-27 at the Orpheum Theatre. “CHICAGO has been honored with 6 Tony Awards®, 2 Olivier Awards® and a Grammy®. Whether you’re looking for your first Broadway musical, whether you’ve seen the Academy Award®-winning film and want to experience the show live on stage or whether you’ve seen it before and want to recapture the magic, CHICAGO always delivers.”
Yesterday, the Today Show on NBC listed Memphis in the top 5 Cities making a strong real estate recovery. Actually ranked at #4, this list shows a positive side of Memphis.
